General Election/MP Election/Lok sabha Election :
- General Election takes place once in 5 years to elect 543 members for the parliament.
- The candidate is chosen from direct people voting from a set of candidates who participate in their respective constituencies.
- A party needs 272 MPs to show majority and form the central government.
- If a party doesn't have 272 MPs, it can ally with other party/parties to form the government.
- Winning party leader/alliance takes oath as Prime Minister.
- Lok sabha meets on matters relating to creation of new law, removing or improving law for the sake of all the citizens of India.
.In 2014 General Election, BJP-led National Democratic Alliance(NDA) won a sweeping victory by taking 336 seats against Congress(UPA). Narendra Modi was elected as Prime Minister.
.In 2004 General Election, Congress-led United Progressive Alliance(UPA) won 218 seats and formed government with external support from allied parties. Manmohan Singh was elected as Prime Minister.
State Assembly Election/MLA Election:
- State Assembly Election takes place once in 5 years to elect members for the legislative assembly. Total strength of each assemble depends on each state's size and population.
- The candidate is chosen from direct people voting from a set of candidates who participate in their respective constituencies.
- Winning party leader/alliance takes oath as Chief Minister.
- Assembly meets on matters relating to creation of new law, removing or improving law for the sake of citizens of the particular state.
Rajya sabha Election:
- Rajya sabha candidates are not elected by direct voting, but by candidates who won in Lok sabha elections. The President of India can also nominate the candidates.
- The candidates will have a tenure of 6 years.
- Headed by Vice President, Rajya sabha is the second level review of any bill to become an act.
- When any bill comes to Rajya sabha from Lok sabha after discussion, it will discuss and approve or send back to Lok sabha for further discussion.
Local Body Election:
- The representatives are elected by people directly in a small locality for Corporations, Municipalities, Panchayats.
- The elections are conducted for every 5 years by State Election Commission.
