An IP address is assigned to every computer on the internet like a street address to every home. Each IP address is unique and it controls the traffic flow between the computers.
There are two different standards of IP addresses. IPV4 and IPV6.
IPV4 - Most widely used IP address format. Nearly 4 billion devices are already assigned in IPV4 format.
IPV6 - IPV6 is the next generation IP designed as a replacement for IPV4. IPV6 is capable of providing 340 undecillion IP addresses.
IP addresses are number strings separated by periods(dots).
- Home network connection normally have a router that is connected to internet via modem.
- Router sits between all the computer and devices connected to your own home network and all the public-facing devices on the internet.
- When you hit a search(www.infobite.net) on google, your computer sends a request to Infobite site's IP address. The search request would be tagged with your IP address so that google knows where to send the response.
- Since our server is on public internet rather than your home network, the router serves as a medium to get your request from the computer and forward the request on to our server.
- Our server in turn sends the right information back to your router which then routes the information back to your device where you can see Infobite site details as a result.
- Google could use your IP address to locate your area to provide information like weather updates.
