What happened in Vachathi?

Vachathi incident is one of the shameful history from Indian Police Department.

- Vachathi is a small village located in Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu, India.

- The villagers were accused of helping sandalwood mafia, Veerappan in smuggling sandalwood and poaching elephants.

- On June 20, 1992 about 269 officials, comprising 155 Forest personnel, 108 Policemen and 6 revenue officers entered the village in search of Veerapan.

- Villagers who are mostly dalits were gathered under a tree and nearly 100 men were brutally assaulted and 18 women were gang-raped by men in police uniform.

- The raid continued for 2 days destroying the villagers properties and killing their cattle.

- The Tamil Nadu Police Department had denied the charges and K.A.Sengottaiyan ( Forest Minister during that time) supported in favor of officials and accused entire village for attacking policemen during investigation.

- However, in 1995 the case moved to CBI after a writ petition filed from Marxist Communist Party of India.

- All the 269 officials were sentenced on September 29, 2011 and compensation was paid to the victims.

- Among the 269 officials, 54 were not alive during the trial. Remaining 215 officials were sentenced according to their crime.

- The 18 rape victims were disguised as male and came to court to identify the police officers.

- The youngsters from Vachathi village married all the 18 women.
